Applications and characteristics of Pilkington automotive glazing.

Head Up Display (HUD) - a technology which assist the driver and improves safety and comfort. Information such as speed, GPS data and many more, are directly displayed into the driver`s vision area of the windshield. A clear image necessitates a high quality glazing.

Sensors and cameras glazing – most of the windshields had been produced with embeded sensors to control the rain, fog and light extras of the vehicle. More and more new models have a build in cameras which facilitates driving, especially at night.

Self-cleaning glazing – Pilkington`s revolutionary technology – the UV rays are reflected from a special interlayer foil which degrades the dust on the windshield.


Climate comfort – windows which provide a climate comfort has a two main advantages: reflecting heat in summer, and keep it in the cabin winter. The amoung of heat that enters the veehicle for standard tinted window is 65%, in solar windows is only 40%. An invisible multilayer coating on the triplex layers reflects the infrared rays and makes this possible. As an result the technology also reduses air conditioner activity, fuel consumption and carbon emissions.


Hydrophobic – designed to increase driver`s visibility. It is optically neutral and does not create distortions. It has an water repellent function. The viewing angle is changing when driving in rain conditions. Appling an aqua control, the hydrophobic coating restores the visibility. It facilitates formation of water drops, helping the air flow to evacuate them faster, including the dust and other dirt elements.
This improves the visual comfort, reducing the use of windshield wipers. The hydrophobic coating can improve driver`s visual perception by almost 34% and reaction time by 25%, especially at night.


Acoustic comfort – reducing the level of external noise. The sound environment has a negative impact on driver and passengers. Loud noses are mainly due to engine ( low frequency range of 100 Hz), wind noise (high frequency range above 2000 Hz). Engine vibrations can cause dngerous resonance the glass, also endangering safety. Acoustic glazing is one of the technical insulation solutions, thereby thereby reducing the noise, without increasing the weight of the vehicle, respectively the fuel consumption. Modern technologies allow a thinner glass production , without sacrificing acoustic comfort y installing special sound-absorbing foils inside the glass.

Acoustic comfort can be one of the few basic vehicle selection criteria and it is a strong argument for improving the overall image of a car manufacturers. Acoustic PVB foil can be used in combination with other automotive glass features such as heating, solar control, reflecting or absorbing coatings.

Acoustic control is due to the intermediate three layers. The outer two layers meet the requirements of conventional PVB foil, providing the mechanical strenght of laminated glass. The inner layer is made of a high fading properties material, which absorbs the noise.


Thermal comfort – when solar radiation reaches the glass surface, part of it is reflected, but another part goes through. That is why car windows have reflective and absorbing properties. Absorbing glazing work in the visible and infrared spectrum of light while reflective glazing influence the invisible range and their omission of unnecessary light is very small.  Another important difference between, is the ability to cope with the heat, especially when the vehicle is under direct sun light. The reflective glazing pushes heat back to the environment, while absorbing ones accumulate it, and later omit it. These capabilities differ when moving because of the air flow.


Atmospheric comfort – due to increase of the time spent in the vehicle and high living standart, more and more people look for a convinient travel. It can be achieved with tinted windows providing solar control. Thay play an important role in the overall vehicles design.

The GALAXEE glass, developed by Pilkington, is a gray glass, used for glazing the front vehicle parts. It reduces the heat transfer inside the cabin by 65%, not allowing a 95% of the harmful UV radiation to enter the vehicle. Thereby extending the interior lifecycle.

In Europe, tinted rear side glazing has a light transmittance of 35% up to 55%. The smallest permeability is 10% and it is applied to a glass roofs. Tinted glazing absorbs infrared radiation, limiting high temperatures inside the vehicle and reduces air conditioning workload and fuel consumption.

Latest technologies allow the driver to electrically control shadind by a button. Thus determines natural light and heat levels entering the cabin and enhances the privacy of passengers.


Heated glazing – Reaches 0 º С in two minutes at outside temperature of  - 5 º С and in 10 minutes when the outside temperature is -18 º С, providing a visual comfort.  Safety has become one of the most important issues for car manufacturers. Appearance of an ice or fog on the windshield during the cold and wet seasons, can compromise it.

There are two solutions preventing the glass from moisture and ice: forced air heating which needs time, and electrical heating with special, built-in invisible heater into the window, which helps for qiuck elimination of moisture throughout the surface. The maximum power is 5-6 Wats per sqaure dcm. The glass temeperature reaches 40- 50º С and 45 - 60ºС for the area under the wipers. A very large number of new model vehicles are equipped with heated windshield. The main advantages are visibility and rapid demisting and defrosting.


Integrated antennas glazing – developed in 1970. Along Japan and Germany, Pilkington has an important role in this endeavor. Nowadays, embeded antennas are used for AM / FM and digital audio transmissions, digital audio broadcasting (DAB), digital video broadcasting (DVB-T), phone (GSM), navigation (GPS), WLAN, remote keyless entry (RKE) and virtual systems. Recent innovations include displaying a part of dashboard electronics onto the windshield.


Security – the side window are hardened and triplex. Laminated triplex windows ensures a higher security level and passenger comfort by increasing resistance against external interference and protection agains theft. These advantages are important. It reduces thefts, increases personal security and attack protection. Auto-glass mounted in the passenger compartment provides different  security levels. The highest class are bulletproof glasses. They are multilayered and manufactured from a special material.
